Gran Canaria is one of Spain's Canary Islands, lying
off northwestern Africa. Due to its weather,
beaches, festivities and duty-free shopping, it
receives 4 million tourists a year.

Port de Plaisance marina is the heart of the capital city of Las
Palmas.

The Muelle is the area surrounding the harbour. It has
entertainment spaces and a modern 5-storey shopping mall where
we got this view of the city.

Las Palmas has many scenic viewpoints from which to see the
city, its port and the Atlantic. Christopher Columbus set sail
from here for what he thought was the Orient.

Doramas Park is a haven in the middle of the city with a lake
and landscaped gardens featuring native plants such as dragos,
ficus and palm trees. |
Elegant historical homes surround Piazza Santa Ana, the heart of
the old town of Vegueta. |
During our visit, the participants in the massive Carnival
parade were preparing their floats.

Thousands of revellers from all over Europe were dressed in
costume to celebrate Carnaval.

The main street of Calle Triana, marked with the Espiral del
Viento, is lined with shops and restaurants and is the hub
of the city. |
The cathedral
of Santa Ana, dating to 1500, anchors Vegueta. Behind it rise
the colorful barrios of San Nicolas and San Juan.

The interior of
the cathedral is noteworthy for its vaulted ceiling and pillars
in the shape of palm trees.
